The Studio Museum is a prominent contemporary art museum that features artists of African descent and work inspired by African-American culture. The current phase of expansion and renovation by Rogers Marvel Architects complements the original interior renovation of a 19th century loft building by J. Max Bond, lending the museum a more visible public face on 125th Street. Recent changes have produced new galleries, a luminous facade/entryway, an expanded lobby, a cafe, an auditorium, and a sculptor garden. The Upper Manhattan Empowerment Zone (UMEZ) provided funding of $150,000 for development of the museum’s gift shop.
